What mixing time should I keep?

  • The mixing time depends on the type of mixer, the batch size, the product properties, the number of products to be mixed and whether liquid is added.
  • A paddle mixer mixes a product faster than a ribbon mixer, because it is based on different mixing principles. A paddle mixer therefore has short mixing times.
  • 15-30 seconds is sufficient for granulates. Too long mixing time can damage the product, costs capacity, energy and can even result in segregation (separation).
  • For powders, 15 to 90 seconds is generally sufficient. Powders require a longer mixing time, especially if small components are added.
  • The volume influences the time to mix the product to a homogeneous mixture. A few kilograms are mixed faster than a few tons of product.
  • The product properties (density, shape, surface structure and size) influence the mixing time. Larger grains or granulates mix faster than fine powders. The volume of grains and granulates is greater. As a result, there are fewer product particles per volume, which means that they are often mixed more quickly. The surface texture affects products that interlock, such as some types of herbs and certain plastics.
  • If liquids are sprayed on, it is important that the liquids can be distributed homogeneously. In general, a time between 20-60 seconds is sufficient for a homogeneous distribution.
