How can I take product from an IBC?
An IBC (Intermediate Bulk Container) is a rectangular 1000 liter plastic container in a steel wire cage. An IBC was originally designed for liquids. Containers with a funnel-shaped spout for powders are also called IBC or tote bin. The content is comparable to the IBC (+/- 1000 liters). IBCs for dry substances are made of stainless steel, steel, aluminum or plastic.
Product intake from an IBC
Liquids: Liquid IBCs are emptied using the force of gravity. The IBC must be higher than the pump, for example on a table. Piping on a slope towards the pump prevents air entrapment. This is important if the container is changed regularly. The liquid pump can be equipped with a dry-running protection. This is a simple and reliable protection with a positive effect on the life of the pump and seals. It is possible to monitor the liquid stock if the IBC is weighed up.
Dry matter (powders / granulates): IBCs for powders can be emptied by means of gravity. The IBC is placed at a discharge station. Then the valve at the bottom of the IBC is opened. This can be done manually or automatically. A discharge station can be equipped with vibrators to further increase the emptying rate. Product can “stick”, especially on sloping walls and in the corners. This depends on the depending on the product properties. IBCs for powders can also be placed with a suction conveyor. To do this, a lance is inserted into the product that sucks up air and product through a venturi.
